Who am I?
My name is Stanley Wong, I am an 18 year old freshman currently attending the University of Maryland as a computer science major. As a freshman, I am taking ENGL101 for my introductory writing course, and one of the cool things about the class is that I got to choose a topic to write about for the entire semester. I thought: what better topic than competitive gaming? I love to play video games, and competitive gaming is an exciting activity that I enjoy watching all the time.

My journey throughout the semester
Before I began research about competitive gaming, I was pretty skeptical of the thought that competitive gamers being athletes. Sure, I loved watching them play my favorite games, but I initially doubted whether they were actually athletes. Now, after conducting research, I have learned a lot about the inconspicuous details of competitive gaming that can be easily overlooked. My research helped me realize how much physical and mental strain gamers have to suffer from, and I realized how many sacrifices they make. After my inquiry, I had a reinforced opinion that competitive gamers were athletes, and I started to think about the future for the industry. Writing my inquiry paper also helped me realize how recent competitive gaming is, especially for scholars. Plenty of popular sources are arguing against competitive gaming, but the industry is still new to scholars, so they are focused primarily on learning about the industry, and haven’t argued against the classification of competitive gaming as a sport. My newly reinforced opinion and newfound research formed into my thesis: competitive gaming is a sport because of its physical and mental implications for its competitors and the health benefits that it provides. As with the inquiry paper, the new research that I conducted further established my perspective into a more concrete one. As of now, I firmly believe that competitive gamers are athletes from the discoveries that I have made.

My mission
The ultimate goal of this website is to persuade you, the reader, that competitive gamers are athletes. While I hope that I can provide convincing evidence to support this argument, I want to at least change any negative predispositions you may have towards gamers.
