Physicality in eSports
There is scientific data that suggests that competitive gamers are subject to physical stress when playing video games. Martin Schutz, a reporter, describes a study conducted by scientists at the German Sports University. Professor Frobose was interested in studying those who compete in eSports because no one had done so previously. After studying the gamers when they compete, he found that they are subject to immense physical strain, achieving “up to 400 movements on the keyboard and the mouse per minute, four times as much as the average person”. Additionally, these demands placed on the players’ motor skills resulted in “a high pulse, sometimes as high as 160 to 180 beats per minute”. These gamers put in a lot of physical work when they compete, and the data shows it. The data also shows how quick their reaction times are. eSports isn’t some activity that anyone can do; science shows that competitive gaming is physically taxing for the players.
